Guatemala Mission - 2009

rescate Day Two started off with a ceremony welcoming our team and introducing us to the troops and students. The National Anthems of both Guatemala and the United States were played and Colonel Rodriguez (the Commandant of the Military Electronics School) spoke at length about the class, setting a level of expectation that we are eager to meet.

Five Stations were set up:
  • Ropes, Jamie Smith and Joe Mancos: Knots used in rescue; anchors; mechanical advantage systems; minimalist rigging
  • Baskets, Shannon Orndorff: Basket rigging for horizontal and vertical raises
  • Lifting, Chuck Webb and Mike Arnold: Use of chain, cable, and struts for stabilizing vehicles in accidents.
  • Hand Tools, Craig Salvesen: Hacksaws, recip saws, and other hand tools for vehicle extrication and access
  • Power Tools, Cory Strange and Mike Allen: Use of hydraulic spreaders and cutters to perform vehicle extrication
Chief Pease served as the Command Officer and he and Captain Steele provided Operations and Logistics. Bruce Pearce served as a assistant wherever needed. The students were divided into 5 groups: Ropes and Basket Rigging stayed at the home base while the other three groups traveled to where the doomed vehicles were. An interesting aside: the second location also stores the vehicles that the president uses when visiting the troops - an immaculate Willys Jeep and Truck that any Jeep fan would love. See the pictures below.

The Instructors worked very hard to challenge the students: in turn the students did a very good job of challenging the instructors. Evolutions were attacked with enthusiasm and energy - there was an air of competition in every exercise. Teaching outlines were expanded as the students completed tasks well ahead of expectations and we started running out of things to teach. Shannon set up a competition for basket rigging - at the end of the day the top team (2 people) was down to 2 minutes and 19 seconds for waist and chest harnesses plus basket lacing. Chuck and Mike Arnold's group got down to 6 minutes for stabilizing a vehicle on its side plus lifting (and cribbing) 8 inches.

More good food and good company. We're getting to know some of the personnel and enjoying learning about them and their country. We're regrouping tonight to add more material to each station - We will have more time in coming days, and the Rescate students are finishing much too early!
