It's been a long week. We are ready to go home, but at the same time we are sad to be leaving our new-found friends. It has been a most satisfying trip. We leave with tremendous respect for the Guatemalan Rescate and their leadership.

There are too many people to thank each one personally - everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome
and to make our stay in Guatemala City a great experience. However, without a doubt the unsung heros are the
interpreters. They had a long week of trying to intepret everything between Craig's Brooklyn accent to Luke's country twang (we did have to
explain that when Craig said "rhe-ahh" he actually meant "rear"). Our assigned intepreters were:

When the day was done, we headed back to the Defense Ministry for a ceremony to mark the end of the class. Silvanya received a medal for
all of the work she did to make this vehicle and this class happen. Each member of the instructional team was given a certificate for
their contribution. We then were treated to a very nice reception and a demonstration of the Marimba, which is the National Instrument of
Guatemala. It was dark when we got back to the base, but there was still work to do. Each student was given a tee-shirt and hat as a momento from our team to theirs. The officers responded by presenting the instructors with patches from their unit. What a fantastic way to end a unforgettable week! |
