Guatemala Mission - 2009

Return to REDSTEAM Home page

rescate In early 2009, REDS Chief David Pease and Rodger Harrison of the organization Paramedics for Children started a conversation about a rescue truck that was being outfitted to go to Guatemala. Paramedics for Children needed equipment for the truck: just as importantly, they needed people that had the expertise to train the Guatemalan Rescate personnel. With the generosity of a number sponsors (click here for sponsor list) the truck was outfitted with a variety of rescue tools, both hand and power.

On August 2, 2009, 11 experienced instructors left Raleigh and Miami for Guatemala City:

  • REDS: David Pease, Luke Steele, Shannon Orndorff, Jamie Smith
  • REDS/Harlowe Fire Department: Chuck Webb
  • REDS/Eastern Wake Fire Department: Mike Arnold
  • REDS/Goldsand Rural Fire Department: Craig Salvesen
  • Creedmoor Fire Department: Mike Allen
  • Rocky Mount Fire Department/Battleboro Fire Department: Cory Strange
  • Moore County Public Safety/Pinebluff Fire Department: Joe Mancos
  • Bruce Pearce
We found a highly motivated and talented group of dedicated people who pushed the instructors and much as the instructors pushed the students. As we teach them the techniques and skills required to use the tools on the new Rescue Truck, we are also learning - about the culture, the people, and even a little Espanol!
